Events and Reports - 3 Doors Down - Live with Waltham in Horsens, Denmark, March 24th 2006

Waltham

This was Waltham's first time ever in Europe and their first show on this tour. It was never made public that Waltham played Horsens, so absolutely nobody knew them. Luckily I checked Waltham's website and was well prepared for a straight to the core performance.

With only around 30 minutes on stage they took fully advantage of the short time and bombarded the gaping audience with melodic power rock. Most songs were from "Permission to Build" plus the new songs that were added to their self titled album (note: The "Waltham" album consists of the majority of "Permission to Build" with 4 new songs). So Lonely and Cheryl were received with open arms by the crowd.

The highlight was All I want Is you - that song simply hits bull eye being one of the most irresistible songs I heard in the last 5 years. Waltham was driven by the energetic singer Frank Pino. Overall the band wasn't overwhelmed by the huge arena and their melodic rock is suited for arenas and stadiums. A very positive experience.

3 Doors Down

Shortly after 3 Doors Down entered the stage to a huge roar from the crowd. They opened with the same track that opens their latest CD "Seventeen Days" Right Where I Belong.

Among the first tracks was their US smash hit Kryptonite from their debut album "The Better Life". I am amused thinking back when I first saw 3 Doors Down and they played that song in a Danish club to around 40-60 gaping people even though Kryptonite already was a US hit. The song is just plain great and within the first half of the set we also got Better Life, the heavy Duck and Run and a common singalong in Be Like That all from the first album.

The track Away From The Sun was warmly welcomed by the approx 2000 people in the audience. The album "Away from the Sun" was a huge hit in Denmark and even though "Seventeen Days" is a better album it haven't delivered the same hit singles as the predecessor. The promoter put the band in a 4000-5000 capacity venue but only managed to sell around 2000 tickets, which I blame on people's short memory. The 2000 people were all enthusiastic and definitely made the band feel welcome.

The main emphasis was on the excellent "Seventeen Days" album with It's Not Me as the shining highlight. I hear an obvious smash hit potential in Landing In London. Landing in London was great live even without strings and Bob Seeger.

3 Doors Down have an almost anti rock star image on stage, since they are polite and nice. Bass player Todd Harrell is the closest to a Rock N' Roll animal with his energetic stage performance and Todd really delivers the goods. The other musicians are more stagnated even though Chris Henderson moves around. Singer Brad Arnold's voice is unique - it is melodic but also has the grasp of rock in it. His vocals were irreproachable.

The stream of new songs continued with sparkling versions of Be Somebody and Behind Those Eyes. The venue seemed a little empty since it was huge - but the band had a firm grasp on the crowd, which was well deserved.

Even though the band has been labeled as a soft rock band, easy digestive and mainstream - 3 Doors Down certainly are a live sweating rock band and deliver the goods on stage. Even though they only released 3 CD's, their material is so strong that the setlist only could be strong. The band even had the reserve of strength to play a brand new song called I Won't Go. I Won't Go is pure rocker that worked well live after the last batch of mid-tempo power ballad rockers. The guys followed in the rocky vein with Changes.

3 Doors Down's roots are more in the southern rock and US rock, which the up-coming tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd proves. These guys have more in common with the classic bands that whatever today's flavor in rock is. 3 Doors Down closed with an emotional, but yet energetic and rocky version of Loser, before the final encore with the huge hits from "Away from the Sun" namely Here Without You and When I'm Gone. Singe Brad Arnold was all smiling since the crowd was really loud on Here Without You. Brad has a very positive personality even though he complained that we made him fat because he was so into our sweets.

All in all a great concert!
