Events and Reports - Scorpions - Live at Jelling festival, Denmark - May 28th 2005
Scorpions were headlining Denmark's Jelling festival. Jelling festival's reputation isn't exactly built on Rock music, but kudos to the festival organization for bringing in a true Rock band.
This day in May everything was perfect as it was the first real summer day of the year. As we arrived to the festival ground everybody were happy and enjoying the sun while flushing down beers. Photographer Borg and I soon hooked up with a couple of other Scorpions fans. We shared beers and talked about our common passion; music and of course Scorpions as well. Time flies when you are in good company and all of sudden the whole afternoon was gone and we located the press tent for a cold beer in the shade and also to try our luck in meeting Scorpions.
The Scorpions "sprit" was very present in the backstage area in form of big tour busses and black Mercedes cars with Scorpions "Unbreakable" printed on.
We waited at the backstage press tent and one by one we got the band members to join our table for a little while. First up was James Kottak, who suffered from serious back problems and later on Mattias Jabs and Klaus Meine joined us. From a band that released their first album in 1974 it's was a huge experience to meet these legends because it's so obvious that they practice labor of Love. Jabs and especially birthday boy Meine were thrilled to play the show and they were very grateful to us as fans. They were so positive and happy people that it just made me look even more forward to their performance. Later we got a minute with Rudolf Schenker in the dressing room where Jabs also was warming up practicing scales.
My high expectations combined with the fantastic weather made me overload my body's liquid depots with cold beer, so please bear with me since I had a little too much to drink.
20 minutes past 10 Scorpions took the stage accompanied by the powerful intro to New Generation off their latest "Unbreakable" album. The band seemed on fire and ready to rock the socks off the crowd. The audience was also eager to rock because of the weak music program earlier on the day.
The band continued with Love' em or leave' em from the new album before we got the first classic from Scorpions impressive catalogue, namely Bad boys running wild.
The band seemed to continue in the same vein as last years Sweden Rock festival with the instrumental Coast to coast and The Zoo mixed with another "Unbreakable" tune Deep and Dark. However, compared to last years performance Scorpions were unstoppable and it was obvious that bass player Pawel Maciwoda was a lot more integrated in the band and they were a tighter unit this time.
Overall Scorpions oozed joy of playing and they were all smiling all the time. The setlist was stronger than last year's Sweden Rock. This was mainly because they reduced the number of "Unbreakable" songs and even though they skipped the strongest song off that album Through My Eyes - the setlist was killer.
Scorpions were really getting warmed up and so was I - apparently I was so "warmed up" that the bouncer wanted me to cool down and decided to force me to leave the festival area. My drunken behavior combined with my enthusiasm for Scorpions was apparently too much for someone, since I spent the next couple of songs backstage trying to convince people from the festival organization to let me stay. I just wanted to get back out and enjoy Scorpions.
Just like the Scorpions song I had a Blackout because it really disturbed my experience that the festival went to extremes and tried to remove me. Oh well - luckily I got back in, but I missed some songs - ironically Blackout was one of them. When I got back in front of the stage Scorpions played the ballad You and I from "Pure Instinct"
Scorpions ended with the ballads Wind of Change and Still Loving You and Klaus Meine proclaimed there was no way they were leaving us without Rock you like a Hurricane. The band was called out for a second encore and did the breathtaking When the smoke is Going Down - one of my all time favorite ballads. It seemed like Scorpions would keep playing encores but When the Smoke is going down put an end to a fantastic performance for the elderly rockers.
Jelling Festival was a very cozy place with around 15.000 guests. The festival really treated us well, which just makes the aftertaste even bitterer because of the aforementioned scene.
This was my fourth Scorpions concert. After Scorpions' performance at Jelling festival I once again have renewed my faith in this great band. Last year's letdown at Sweden Rock festival was washed away by this strong concert. There is no doubt that next time I will be there.. .. sober :-)

I had a problem with the sub-categories of heavy metal genre.. but when i heard this band.. it really didnt matter..
I dont have a problem with what genre a band can belong.. as long as it gives me the same drive as when i listen to some of my ever fav songs..
I have Moment of Glory DVD - and the person who composes notes for the orchestra defines this band as "band having soft beginnings and very powerful choruses"... no better way to put it really..
When i watch scorpions.. especially Mathias Jabs.. its like he is enjoying 100% every moment of it, i mean he is very expressive.. and Klaus Meine is so impeccable when it comes to him singing his high notes..
"time stands still...." and the notes to follow in "you and i" is a very good example.
Many people associate heavy metal with drugs, tatoos, alcohol.. and so it is very "restrictive" to these bad guys who listen to them.. Really man.. i hate when people categorise music by these means..
One band which can put these steroetypes to an end and who already have.. is Scorpions..
I mean, their music appeals to a wide range of audience.. from young kids to old people. Still people put their music in a specific category in music stores..
Doesnt really matter.. as long as the music rocks.. and rocks hard!

Anyway, I love this band because it has a lot of amazing songs and I love this band so much! But you know some people think that rock bands are under the influence but their very wrong about that! |
