Events and Reports - Pain of Salvation - Live at TEX, Copenhagen
To say I was looking forward to this concert would be a huge understatement. After seeing them play a great, but too damn short show before the Dream Theater concert in KB hallen in January I was hungry for more.
I took the train from Aarhus in the afternoon and met up with Mads in the train where we prepared for the concert with some beers :) As TEX is a half restaurant and half "concert place" it was the obvious choice for dinner. The band was set to play at 23.30. They had set up all their gear and was starting to do sound checks when they were told by the club that all soundchecks should be done after 23.00. Well, that left half an hour for something that eventually took an hour and a half.
When the concert started at 00.30 I was ready! So was the band. They were really alive and smiling most of the time during the concert. I noticed some sound problems during the show but that might be because I was right in front of the stage. At times I couldn't hear Daniels voice and other times the lead guitar was mysteriously gone. Mads noticed that the sound was better in the back though. Also the heat in the club was pretty exhausting and after 5 minutes everybody were sweating like pigs. :)
Pain of Salvation played for almost two hours with a small break in between their sets. They had decided to play songs from all their album in chronological order. The first part of the concert consisted of songs from Entropia and One hour by the concrete lake. Some of the highlights were ! (Foreword), Oblivion Ocean, and Inside out. Daniel introduced Inside out by saying "Now, here's a song we haven't played in three years". Well, they must have practiced in secret because it sounded awesome :) The band was really alive and very energetic. As the stage was very small the audience and band got very close to each other. That added a very intimate feeling to the concert. I was standing right in front of Johan Hallgren (Guitarist) during the first part of the concert only like half a meter away.
During the break the band hung around, talked to the fans and signed various stuff.
After the half an hour break PoS were ready to perform the second part of the set. Unfortunately they had to cut it short due to the time limit set by the club. During this second set the band seemed a little tired. Maybe it was because of the heat or because they had to cut the set short, I don't know. But they still performed an awesome second set. The highlight for me were definitely when they played In the flesh. Great to hear that song live. Beyond the pale, Fandango and just about everything else was amazing too. I was a little dissappointed that they only played the three same songs from Remedy Lane as they did at the DT concert, but I guess they would have played more if they didn't have to cut the show short. I shouldn't really complain as the band played an awesome concert.
If you get a chance to see Pain of Salvation live then I urge you to take it. If you don't know the music, then you can at least marvel at their amazing technical skills.
As a special surprise encore Daniel Gildenlöw (Singer) and Fredrik Hermansson (Keyboards) performed a cover version of an Elton John song. I haven't got a clue what the name of the song was, but it was a nice way to calm down after a great concert of complicated music.
This is definitely not the last time I will travel somewhere to see Pain of Salvation live. This was a very special concert with a great atmosphere. I only hope that they get some better surroundings to play in next time. They deserve it!
