Article - Dimebag Darrell remembered
As we all try to make sense of what happened on the night of December 9, 2004, we must remember Dimebag Darrel for the person and musician that he was. During a performance at Columbus Ohio's Alrosa Villa nightclub, one of metal's most influenticial guitarists Dimebag Darrel (born Darrel Abbott August 20th, 1966, Dallas, Texas) who was on tour with his current band Damageplan, was shot and killed by a deranged audience member for at the time of this writing, reasons unknown. A very sad day in metal history.
But at this point, lets look back upon the life of one of the last popular guitar heroes standing (at least in America). Dimebag, along with his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott had come to great fame over the last decade with their group Pantera, who even in the world of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, released a third album, 1993's Far Beyond Driven, that debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, continuing to have success with not only the metal crowd, but the alternative rock crowd as well, some even thought in the nineties, that they might have been the heir to the Metallica throne.
Dimebag, along with his brother Vinnie, grew up in Texas and eventually formed Pantera, whose original lineup dressed in, yes, spandex and makeup, but after an aggressive lead singer, Phil Anselmo joined the band, the band left their "hair metal" days behind them and quickly moved on to a more raunchy, but yet melodic sound.
With the signing to Atlantic's Atco division (later dissolving into Elektra), the band released Cowboys From Hell, which along with the follow up Vulgar Display of Power, created more than just a buzz in the metal world, they would become full fucking blown rock stars and still remain sacred to the metal shroud, where no cries of "sell out" were present among the headbanging world. During their career they would spawn hits such as "Cemetery Gates" (featured on the Tales from the Crypt: Demon Night Soundtrack), "Walk," the Sabbath cover of "Planet Caravan," and cult favorites such as "Fucking Hostile" among countless others. Follow up records such as Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill would go multi-platinum, and Elektra/Rhino Records would release a greatest hits compilation that included a DVD of their video collection.
But besides Pantera marveling in successful album sales, touring, and staying above all the mainstream mumbo Jumbo, Dimebag was recognized as one of the top guitarists throughout the years, appearing on the cover of numerous guitar magazines. But the most intriguing thing about him, besides his playing, is that his axe, a Dean "Flying V meets Explorer," became synonymous with his persona, and although Washburn would make a line of guitars that would bear the design and name for a few years, Dimebag had recently returned to Dean for another endorsement deal less than a month ago. Dimebag's buzzsaw sound was also heard coming out of Randall amplification over the years, only furthering his shred mantra.
Originally known as "Diamond Darrel" in the earlier days of Pantera, he changed his stage name due to, well, we all know what it means. After Pantera disbanded due to conflicts within the band, both the Abbott Brothers would form Damageplan, a more modern nu-metal-ish sounding band that distanced themselves from the past, however, Dimebag's guitar prowess was still in complete surge at this point, he still had a future that could have been ahead of him, but some deranged asshole had other plans.
As a "hooded" hoodlum gunman took the stage, reports say that two bouncers followed the gunman named Nathan Gale, who opened fire also killing one of the bouncers and two other audience members, as well as injuring others before being shot to death by police officer James D. Niggemeyer, who had been patrolling the area at the time. At this time no motive has been given, but grudges and beliefs that Gale knew the band has not been ruled out according to C-News. Reports and opinions show that the club was located in a rough area of Columbus, but regardless it was often crowded according to a local Columbus City Search guide.
Dimebag, 38, joins a long list of musicians who have died in such a meaningless way, it's wasn't drug or illness related, no car accident, and no self-destruction, just some insane piece of shit who wants to fuck everything up.
Although Dimebag had great success, he was known as a "down-to-earth" guy, was extremely nice, was cool to hang around with, and left the uppity attitude of many so-called "rock stars" behind, he will be forever missed within the metal community.
On one last note, I need to ask everybody, fans, booking agents, club owners, to please not to freak out about this, which in other words means, don't be afraid to go see or support live music, don't let that shitass Gale fuck it up for us. Keep the fire burning strong for metal and continue to show your support for metal and live music, after all that's what Dimebag would have wanted. Our prayers, condolences, and thoughts are with the close friends of Dimebag and the Abbott family.

Comment by Tajs (Anonymous) - Friday, December 10, 2004 | This is a great loss for the metal world. Dimebag was one of the few truly unique guitarists out there, who has surely inspired thousands of young guitarists over the whole world. He was one of the few who was able of playing the tightest, meanest rythm guitar possible and then going on to play a solo that would bring tears to your eyes.
RIP Dimebag Darrel. |

Comment by Tony Koretz (Anonymous) - Monday, December 13, 2004 | ### Dimebag Darrel's Killing
The topic on every metal fans lips at the moment is the crazed killing of people in a club, including Dimebag Darrel.
I think it is a sad thing that has happened, and in no way do I condone the killing. But why is it so surprising that a crazed metal fan would shoot people, when so much metal music portrays death, destruction, doom, satanism and hate. Surely this is a natural outcome in a way, that what people feed themselves on they eventually become. I will probably take some flack for this, but if people want to play with satanistic ideals why would the result be anything other than death? After all it's what the music teaches. People like to associate themselves with the devil, and they can so easily become like him.
"You belong to your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning...." John 8:44
My point is that if you go to most metal sites, and I have close friends that run some of these, as well as metal radio shows both on the net and on air. Some of these guys play my music on their shows, so I am not knocking these people. What I am saying is that if you have images of demons, skeletons, death and doom, and promote so called "Death Metal" and angry music, why is it so strange that some sicko who is into that stuff goes out and puts it into practice?
I agree most metallers are non violent. Like I say I have some close friends who are in the industry in that field that wouldn't hurt a fly. But I have also been round enough violent/angry metallers who gain fuel from the music they listen to. I enjoy hard rock music etc, but I am also somewhat perturbed by the facination with death, blood etc that pervades much of that music.
Do lyrics such as these help anybody live a better life, become a better person ? I think not. To me it just incites more that's negative and more anger.
"
IT BRINGS ME GREAT PLEASURE
TO SAY MY NEXT JOB IS YOU
DON'T YOU KNOW THAT
KILLING IS MY BUSINESS
AND BUSINESS IS GOOD
Megadeth "Killing is my business"
"Out of my mind,
gun up to the mouth
No pretension, execution, live and learn , rape and turn
Fret not family,
nor pre-judged army
This is for me,
and me only, cowards only
Try it"
Pantera "Suicide Note pt 11"
"Homicide-Suicide
Hate heals, you should try it sometime
Strive for Peace with acts of war
The beauty of death we all adore"
Slayer "Disciple"
"Kill
I will
Have my sacrifice
Plead
With fear
I am getting near"
Judas Priest -"Burn in Hell"
I could quote a zillion other lyrics from the metal fraternity. You can give me flack for this, but I don't believe any one is any better off for listening to this kind of stuff.
By contrast I think Alice Cooper's "Last temptation" album hit the nail perfectly on the head in his brilliant use of lyrics throughout. This album sums up the whole picture pretty well in my books. Music can be hard and loud without having to incite violence as is the case with this album. I probably won't make any friends here with this stand, but let's not bury our heads in the sand and pretend there's no correlation between violent music and violent acts.

Comment by Ben@metalreviews.com (Anonymous) - Monday, December 13, 2004 | You know, I have never met Nathan Gale and I never will but I wish he wasnt dead solely so I could beat the living hell out of him and then shit on his lifeless body. what he did was ruin the lives of many families and take the lives of human beings who were doing nothing more than entertaining people, doing their jobs and going to see a concert on a Wed night.
Tony, I see your point but I have to disagree. I could counter with any number of Power Metal bands' songs that pertain to freedom, happiness, glory with nothing whatsoever to do with death or destruction but its one am and I need sleep. Maybe tomorrow.

Comment by Nina - RevelationZ (Anonymous) - Monday, December 13, 2004 | First of all, I want to express my sadness that this happened.it truly is tragic!
For Tony:
"This is a natural outcome"? What the fuck?? Are you saying Dimebag sort of asked for this?
I kind of see some of your points, but your way of thinking remind me of that of people who wants to ban everything from Horror movies to comic books because it COULD have a bad influence on someone. Yes, everything can have an impact on people, but as we all know people interpret stuff differently.
Violent lyrics/movies/etc. can have a lot of different personal meanings to people, and can be read in various ways. Even lyrics that are pure gore can have an uplifting influence on some, and make them judge the content with their own mind. If everything including violence caused violence the solution would be simple: to remove all sort of art, news, and everything else dealing with the darker sides of life. Art is one of the only free spaces we have to express these "forbidden" and normal, human feelings of anger, despair, fear, etc. WITOUT harming others!
As for your comment about if these lyrics make anyone live a better life, I can only say, well, yes, me! I have gained a lot of insight, have gained an own attitude (against violence, of course), and have grown with the music in my life. A lot of people live a better life, because they can get some aggression out to this music, again without doing any evil in any way!
Of course Metal influence people in different ways, some gets positively effected and some negatively. But the decision to kill is ALWAYS your own!!

Comment by Tony Koretz (Anonymous) - Tuesday, December 14, 2004 | Firstly in no way am I saying that Dimebag "personally" asked for this. What has happened is really sad and a tragedy. What I am saying is there has been a spiral further and further into violence and anger in metal (infact society in general it seems) with the spawning of black metal, death metal, doom metal etc. There is a known correlation between violence in movies/tv and actual violence. Why would this not apply to music where often impressionable young people saturate themselves in music steeped in anger, hate, violence and revenge? Also Darrell Abbot may well have been a nice guy, as one of my friends who interviewed him for a radio show, had a few drinks with him says. My point is aimed as a generalisation at much of the music scene with its pictures of skeletons with guns, dripping blood, impaled on knives and so forth and lyrics that go with that stuff. Nobody likes to have their music spoken of negatively, and I realise what I have said will not be liked by some, but this is the way I see things, and I challenge people to think it through with a view that is not biased by their personal tastes before they dismiss it. I came across an article today which presents some interesting facts. I have added the url to this here. I am in no way affiliated with the article, I discovered it via google. It is well worth a read on this subject.

Comment by Nina - RevelationZ (Anonymous) - Wednesday, December 15, 2004 | @Tony:
I've read the very disturbing article.
As I see it, this article explains some ways music can be used as a tool for recruiting young people to certain groups of ideology (in this case nazism, but it could have been anything). Of course, music can create bonds between like minded people and influence people in certain ways. I don't disagree with this, but I find it important to question, if these people wouldn't have ended up being the same persons that the music are accused of "making" them, without this influence? Hadn't they found this influence to trigger their hatred elsewhere?
I'm not denying the fact, that most of the things we engage in in our everyday lives, affects us. Music can possibly release something inside a person, but if something (hatred, violence, etc.) is being released, it means it was already there, and had it not been released by the music, it had been by something else!
So, what can we do to prevent this? See to, that society doesn't create these hateful individuals in the first place. What made these people so sick in their heads? How can we see to, that something like this won't happen again? That's the real question.
By banning all sorts of things you think could make people act in this or that way, you are not dealing with the real problem (the people who act like psychos), because if you ban one thing which CAN fuel hatred, those guys can find a new thing with the same effect. Music, movies etc. doesn't create these feelings but can probably release something that's already there.had it not been released by one thing, then by another, because you can never take away EVERYTHING that could trigger an evil action or thought.
Thanks for reading.

Comments: 518 | | As Nina, I believe that blaming art for people's actions is not the right way to look at it. It is like an easy scapegoat for those who don't want to see the problems that lie beyond. I don't want to get into psychology too much, but there are deeper reasons why people act like they do. It is just so sad that it comes this far sometimes.

Comment by Rippinclaw (Anonymous) - Sunday, December 26, 2004 | Now that the Real Metal World "Oldschool" has lost one of the greatest guitarist to ever play six strings. I hope someone else steps up to the plate. I've heard what they call nu-metal and it doesn't even come close to older bands like Pantera, Priest, Maiden, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, Vicious Rumors, Megadeth and Early Metallica. I like long hair and guitar solos in my Metal and a lot of the newer bands don't even have a clue. Anyone can play rythym all the way through a 3 or 4 minutes song! Dimebag will truly be missed because he and Vinnie were keeping the Metal faith alive. It saddens me to think what Metal will be like now without Dime. My souls Bleeds and my heart aches because of this sensless bullshit!!!!!! I love you my Metal brother. C-Ya in the afterlife!
RIP "Dimebag" |

Comment by Poul (Anonymous) - Sunday, January 16, 2005 | @Tony Koretz
When completely leaving out the interpretation part of listening to a lyric then yes, things do become what you would like them to sound like. But honestly, what you are posting there is utter bull, sounding exactly like so many "bible-belt mail-order priests". Ignorant, close-minded and utterly self-righteous.
Please, just be quiet when nothing but stupidity comes from your mouth. |
Comment by Jane (Anonymous) - Friday, January 28, 2005 | @ Tony,
I tend to feel that Christian metal may be more to my liking & of a more wholesome metal sound. It does not lyrically focus on the darker side of metal. Bands like Pillar and Petra are great and I love pure metal for the sound, yet, when listening or "reading" the lyrics; a more gruesome image is evident. Christian metal may be another avenue for those that find old school and classical metal offensive. |

So lets relize were the real music came from and not let our kids listen to rap and only listen to heavy metal so lets bring them back for DIMEBAG DARRELL SO NOW IS THE TIME FOR ME TO RISE TO MY FEET |
Comment by Nina - RevelationZ (Anonymous) - Thursday, May 12, 2005 | @jaramiah: Yeah...but it's just that it is very easy to praise someone who is not around anymore...lots of bands come forward now -when he is dead- with all their fine words of praise, and it's just a little too easy a way to get publicity to me. Everytime some musician die, evryone has suddenly been a fan of him "for ages"...yeah right! Of course Dimebag's death is an enourmous tragedy, I also liked what he did a lot, but I don't like it MORE now, just because he's gone! This is far more of a tragedy to his friends, family and those who were close to him, when he was alive! Using it to make one's own band get a place in the spotlight is just tasteless... |
