Events and Reports - Velvet Revolver - Live at Skanderborg Festival 2004
Written by Michael

The whole reason for me to attend this festival was Velvet Revolver. The most beautiful festival in Denmark really made a scoop when they signed Velvet Revolver to open their European tour on Danish ground.

The festival began Thursday and Velvet Revolver was scheduled to play Sunday at 6.15 in the evening. The festival's target group is people in the late 20's and 30's plus college kids - it is definitely not a rock festival exemplified by other headliners Pink and Pet Shop Boys. Both at the camping ground, festival site and the press tent, I couldn't sense the same enthusiasm as I had in seeing Velvet Revolver.

4 years before I had seen and met Slash when he toured with his Snakepit, but this time it was different since the other musicians included Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Scott Weiland.

From the old Guns N' Roses days we know that nothings sure before the band physically is on stage, so I was getting a little bit nervous when Velvet Revolver didn't show up at stage time. 15 minutes late Velvet Revolver finally hit the stage. First Duff and Matt Sorum appeared. Matt Sorum was smiling and Duff looked eager to Rock. However, none of the others were there and after a while Duff started to yell out and signaling backstage for the others to appear.

Of course the crowd enthusiastic welcomed Scot Weiland and the most prominent of them all Slash. Velvet Revolver immediately kicked into Sucker Train Blues, which also is opening song on their brilliant debut album "Contraband".

My 2 album favorites Do it for the kids and Headspace followed in really rocking versions. Scott Weiland had a raised platform to stand upon and his facial expression was manic. Duff really gave people in the front row their moneys worth since he had eye contact with the first few rows of people standing at his side of the stage.

The weather was perfect and likewise the surroundings since the stages are inside of a beech tree forest. The festival has 2 main stages, which are connected so the crew can make ready at the stage not performed at. However, Slash saw the thing a one huge stage and several times he ran to the other stage and really tried to get everyone into the Velvet Revolver experience.

First song representing the members' previous history was Stone Temple Pilots' Crackerman. Scott sang several lines through a megaphone, which he used on several songs actually. Sometimes Scott Weiland's voice was drowned in the massive wall of sound. Therefore it was nice to bring things down in the amazing ballad Fall to Pieces.

It so obvious that these guys got so MUCH charisma and Rock star ooze. There was something magical about the guys on stage. They all posed perfect for the audience, the photographers and clearly aware of every move they made.

The first couple of rows was very enthusiastic about Velvet Revolver, but in general it seemed most didn't knew their material, which underlines the second paragraph of this review - the festival is not a Rock festival. Maybe that was the reason why Slash took the mike and said to the audience "Let's see if you know this one then" and then blasted into Set Me Free. Guitarist Dave Kushner was all on fire for this song. Slash, wearing a Megadeth t-shirt, played an extensive solo on Set Me Free.

The first, and surprisingly only, Guns N' Roses song was It's So Easy, where Scott did a great job. Duff did backing vocals for this rocker, which was followed by Scott yelling out to the audience "I Know, I Know, Here I Come Here I Come, I Come". For us fans it was clear that next to come was the ultimate Stone Temple Pilots hit Sex Type Thing. I am telling you it sounded great. The band was really warmed up and they all gave it a hundred percent. Scott's voice sounded a little bit stronger or maybe the sound guy had adjusted the levels. The concert really had potential to become concert of the year. They did a really cool ending to Sex Type Thing by speeding up the end.

All good things always come to a quick end. Velvet Revolver left the stage after only 9 songs and only around 45 minutes on stage. I was beginning to worry if they would do an encore because they draw out the time, but finally retuned for encores. First up was Slither, where Slash put on his top hat like it was late eighties/early nineties. After such an energetic performance Slither actually was a dead spot. Slither brings down the pace and doesn't have the same singalong/party appeal as many other Velvet Revolver or Guns N' Roses songs.

All band members looked good. Scott was skinny and looked like a man with drug problems. Duff looked really fit for this tour. Slash looked as in his heyday since he was in good shape and had dyed his hair all black to hide his touch of grey. Dave Kushner was really good on stage even though he probably gets the least attention from the crowd. Matt Sorum looked really happy to be in a great band again and play in front of large audiences.

I think we all hoped for a Guns N' Roses hit to end the show. After Slither my mind was running through some Velvet Revolver songs that I was missing, namely the brilliant Superhuman, the emotional You Got No Right or the ass kicking Spectacle. The band had good intentions when the closed with a cover version of Cheap Trick's Surrender. A song everyone in America knows, but since Cheap Trick never really made in Europe it seemed like only a handful knew the song.

After only around 60 minutes on stage Velvet Revolver left after a fantastic concert with a weird aftertaste. The show was excellent, the band sounded good. It was a huge experience to watch theses living legends - but after a 4 day festival only because of Velvet Revolver 60 minutes couldn't satisfy my urge for this amazing band. Maybe Velvet Revolver knew this wasn't their crowd since the festival was sold out before Velvet Revolver was added to the bill. All I know is that this concert was freakin' excellent and I WANTED MUCH MORE.

1. Sucker Train Blues
2. Do It For The Kids

5. Big Machine
6. Fall To Pieces
7. Set Me Free

Thank you - finally - I've been checking your site for this rewiev. But as they say "good things are worth waiting for". Velvet on Skanderborg was excellent - in fact the only band on Skanderborg 2004 - worth mentioning.

I saw Velvet Revolver recently in Nashvile, TN at the Buzz Fest concert. I had the Contraband album and knew the words by heart. It was a thrill to see the band live, great instrumentation, but I was so disappointed in some of the vocals. Several songs were sung very off key and it was surprising from a "super" group with Guns and Roses members. Also, no encore for the fans, glad to hear they did do one in Skanderborg. Music is for the fans!

doooood! This sounds so awesome, and makes me want to see them even more. I missed my only chance... I didn't know who they were and now I'm really craving to see them... I want to see all the great stuff you described, asside maybe Scott using the megaphone but other then that... it sounds like a really awesome experience. Curse my non knowing of one of the best bands in the world. I await my next chance, and I really hope I get it. VR forever!

Nice review dude, & great photos. I'm seeing them this weekend here in Melbourne Australia - I CANNOT F*CKING WAIT. I just hope the crowd is into it, if I miss out on an encore I'm gonna be p*ssed big time. To the 15yo girl, I'm a 44yo guy - how's that for broad appeal...

I saw Velvet Revolver at their Melbourne (Australia) show (27th Feb 2005) and let me just say...FUCK YEAH! I read a few other reviews and people were saying that VR didn't do 'Mr. Brownstone'. Guys, I am so sorry, but YOU MISSED OUT!!!!! I was so greatful as it's one of my fave GnR songs!! I was less than 1m away from Slash, Duff and Dave! Hehe! Duff and Dave looked at me lots, lol. But I couldn't see much of Slash's face, lol.
VR, thanks so much for the best experience of my life! You truly do 'rock our jocks'! [I made a sign that said "VR; you rock our jocks!" and Duff read it and smiled!!)

Comment by MetalChickie (Anonymous) - Wednesday, May 30, 2007
Velvet Revolver aint all that. :I Slash is all that makes them OK. Their music is RADIO and BORING. Slash should go back to Snakepit and leave Volver to these other people. Sucky music.
