Events and Reports - Vanilla Fudge - Live at Pumpehuset - Copenhagen, Denmark - October 9th - 2003
After last year's killer show in Randers I was eagerly looking forward to hearing the reunited 60ies psychedelic hard rock band Vanilla Fudge once again. Last year I went to the concert without any expectations and without really knowing any of the songs. This had changed this year, and I knew what to expect of this great live band. The concert was held at Pumpehuset in Copenhagen, and I think it must have been close to sold out - it was packed with people as my father and I arrived at Pumpehuset. I suspect that a lot of people came to hear the warm up act CV Jørgensen at the concert last year, but this year a lot of "real" Vanilla Fudge fans had arrived.
The warm up act were The Lizards. We only saw the last part of their show, but it sounded pretty cool. The Lizards feature some competent musicians, for example the drummer Bobby Rondinelli who has toured with bands such as Black Sabbath and Rainbow.
Vanilla Fudge's line-up had changed compared to last year's concert. Original member Tim Bogert (bass player) had rejoined the band and replaced Pete Bremy. Carmine Appice was still behind the kit, Bill Pascali played the organ and finally Teddy Rondinelli (Bobby Rondinelli's brother) had taken over the guitar from Vince Martell. It soon became clear that the 2 man line-up change had not changed the energy of Vanilla Fudge. Tim Bogert was indeed a huge improvement to the band, and Teddy Rondinelli did a good job with the guitar work as well. Finally Carmine Appice and Bill Pascali performed with the same high quality as last year.
The set list had not changed much from last year; it was great to hear old classics as Shotgun, People Get Ready and You Keep me Hangin' On - this time actually knowing they were classics. They also played Season of the Witch, Superstition and Do You Think I'm Sexy (Rod Stewart cover) and the N*Sync cover Tearin' up my Heart (in a very alternative and heavy version I might add). Finally they played the Beatles song You Can't do That. When they played this song Chuck Wright took over the bass and Tim Bogert did the vocals. Chuck Wright is the substitute bass player the band had brought in case Tim Bogert was not feeling well.
Now one of the things I enjoy about Vanilla Fudge and other bands from that period is that it is allowed for the musicians to show off. You don't see many bands nowadays with 10 minute long drum solos for example. That is exactly what we got from Carmine Appice just like last year. Again it was a real pleasure; Mr. Appice's drumming skills are amazing and have to be experienced. This time Tim Bogert also got the chance to show off with a solo that ended up being the concert highlight for me. That guy plays one mean bass!
They had saved a special treat for the end of the evening - nothing less than a drum duel between Carmine Appice and Bobby Rondinelli. Two snare drums were brought in, and a quite impressive, but most of all fun show started. They showed that it is quite amazing the things you can do with only one drum. I shall not be the judge to who won the duel, but it sure was entertaining.
The concert contained more surprises; Chuck Wright and all the members from The Lizards entered the scene and did Parchman Farm, which ended a great concert at Pumpehuset. Once again I take my hat off for these guys. I forgot to mention that the crowd was very good too; much better than last year, and I think this had a positive effect on the band.
Vanilla Fudge may not be metal, but it sure is heavy. A warm thanks to the band members for the chat, and a special greeting to Bill Pascali.

Love your photo of Teddy and Timmy together we may just add it to our Vanilla Fudge page with all due credit to you of course (and your permission).
We now have a new URL to offer, it is WWW.ALVINLEE.DE and our other one is WWW.TEN-YEARS-AFTER.COM
The Fudge and TYA were to play together here this past Summer but
Da Fudge left before that event took place. You can see our Vanilla Fudge Project, just go to the bottom of our homepage and look for our Hall Of Fame Section.
Love your website and your work.
Much respect from your friends in Germany,
