Other information Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band? Hi I'm Seb and I play drums for Mumakil. How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now? We play brutal and fast grindcore. We always played that kind of music in the past and with our previous bands / projects. What is your latest album and why should people buy it? Our new album is called "Behold the Failure". It's available on the mighty Relapse Records. I think if you like grind, death-metal, and extreme music, then you should like this CD. Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today? Mumakil was founded in May 2004 in Geneva. Jeje (guitar) and Taverne (bass) had the idea to create a new grind project here. So they asked Tom (voice) and myself (drums) to join their new project and we played our very first show in November 2004 with grindcore heroes Nasum, here in Geneva. Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry? Yes. Now Mumakil has became more than just a project, it's our main band and it requires a lot of our time. We don't really ask ourselves if we're being important or getting even more fans etc. We just do our job and want to have fun as much as possible with this band. Simple. Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band? Well we really enjoyed touring with French grinders BLOCKHEADS. They really kick ass and they're very good friends of us. We also had a great time during the recording session of Behold the Failure. I think that we found a really personal sound and production that we might keep and try to improve for the next recordings. How is the writing process in the band? Well it's pretty simple, there's not much things to explain about this. Our guitarist brings 2-3 new riffs and we try to find a cool and original structure with breaks, drum fills etc. Then we try to include the new tracks on our live setlist. For us it's the best way to assimilate new songs. What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music? I started playing drums when I was at college. I was like 16 years old and started my first band (Deceit) with 4 friends of mine. I discovered extreme bands (Napalm, Suffo, Nasum etc) and I naturally came into grindcore and extreme drumming. I'm not really interested in any other thing than playing grind and tour with Mumakil. Do you have any idols? If yes, who? I like extreme drummers like Derek Roddy, Kevin Talley, Kai Hahto, the guys from Coliseum. Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it? No. I'm very proud of all the things we've done with Mumakil and with my first band. Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself? Mmm.. yeah there's a track on our 1st album (Customized Warfare) which is very heavy and slow.. Everyone likes it except me ahah! How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums? The lyrics are important for us. They bring a better rhythmic impact on the vocals. It's also great for us to insult people/things we dislike through our music (corruption, warfare industry, global domination, cops, scene posers, etc). What do you think about the state of the music industry today? The music industry is now living a crucial period. Playing grindcore with Mumakil will never pay my bills, but I simply hope that great labels like Relapse, who hardly work for the music they like, are going to survive to this crisis. What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy? Today you easily can find all the CDs you want on Internet databases (links on blogs etc). It's a problem for the bands and labels whose objective is to gain money through selling CDs. I think everyone has to adapt to this system, which currently can't be limited, except by laws on music piracy etc. Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it? Enjoying simple things, partying with friends, going to shows, practicing a bit sports, things like that.. Can you describe a typical day in your life? Waking up in the morning at 10am.. try to find a job because I just finished my studies at the university, listening to new stuffs, then I go to the practice room to grind with my band. What do you like to spend your time with besides music? I try to spend as much time as possible with my lady.. This isn't always so easy ahah! I also play football in a small local club. What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour? Nothing in special.. That was fucking great to play at the Hellfest in France in 2007 with Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Misery Index etc. And of course the Obscene Extreme in 2006 was fucking sick. You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each) OK, 3 albums : Nasum - human 2.0 Meshuggah - destroy erase improve Neurosis - Times of Grace 3 movies : Sin City Fight Club FEAST (this one's crazy!! Check it out!!) What is your favourite joke? Not really a joke.. but : "Better be lucky than smart" Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band? We're now working on tourdates planning for 2009 and 2010. "Behold the Failure" has just been released on Relapse Records. We'll try to do as much shows as possible in Europe and in the US to promote the CD. Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers. Well thank you for the interview. Check us out on www.myspace.com/mumakil and I hope you'll enjoy the new album. Cheers!
